The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has faulted the composition of President Bola Tinubu’s Campaign Council for the 2027 general elections, raising questions about the seriousness of the government in handling corruption cases in the country.

It criticised the released list on Saturday in a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi.

Earlier, the All Progressives Congress (APC) constituted a 108-member presidential campaign council for the 2027 general elections, with former Zamfara State Governor, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, appointed as the Director-General.

While President Bola Tinubu will serve as chairman of the council, Vice-President Kashim Shettima and APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, will serve as vice-chairmen.

Reacting to the announcement by the ruling party, the ADC described the newly inaugurated council as a rehabilitation centre for corruption suspects.

Abdullahi specifically questioned the presence of former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Betta Edu, who was suspended by President Tinubu in January 2024 amid controversy surrounding an attempted transfer of N585 million from the National Social Investment Programme Agency account into a private account.

The party also frowned at the inclusion of former Chairman of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, Ngozi Olejeme, who has faced prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged financial offences, in the campaign structure.

The ADC challenged the Federal Government to explain whether the cases involving the two former officials and others associated with the campaign council had been resolved.

“The Campaign Council is full of corruption suspects. If they have been cleared, the government should show how and when and by whom they were cleared,” the ADC queried.
