American singer, songwriter and actress, Mary Jane Blige—also known as Mary J. Blige—has admitted that she is occasionally filled with regret when looking back at her decision not to have a child of her own.

The ‘Family Affair’ hitmaker opened up about the topic recently while appearing as a guest on the latest episode of the IMO podcast with Michelle Obama.

Mary J. Blige noted on the show that her choice not to have children was born out of the realities facing the people around her who had kids at the time.

According to the legendary singer, watching relatives pour their energy into raising children, juggling babysitters, and giving up personal freedom left a strong impression on her as a young woman.

”When I was younger, I saw my family members struggle raising kids, needing babysitters, not having freedom, so when I was younger I made the choice not to have any kids,” Mary J. Blige said.

Now in her fifties, the Grammy-winning artist said seeing those same family members build meaningful, deep relationships with their now-teenage children gave her a new lens through which to view the whole question.

”But now as I’ve got older and get to see how their teenagers are valuable to them, I sometimes regret not having them early too,” the 55-year-old added.

While not framing her admission as a crisis or a source of ongoing pain, Mary J. Blige said it brought an honest reflection on how life’s perspectives shift over time, and how choices that once felt certain can look different in hindsight.
