Former Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has backed Arsenal to win the English Premier League (EPL) title this season, despite admitting it is always a difficult feat.

He made this known on Sunday while analysing the Gunners’ 3-0 thrashing of last year’s EPL runners-up, Manchester City, in the Community Shield on talkSPORT.

Goals from Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz, and Martin Ødegaard helped Arsenal to an emphatic victory at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

Mikel Arteta’s men took the lead after just 24 seconds, doubled their advantage thanks to some static City defending in the 28th minute, and then added a third three minutes into the second half.

Reacting to the performance of the two teams, Pardew insisted that the North London club look head and shoulders above other English Premier League (EPL) teams.

He said: “It’s always difficult to win the Premier League, especially back-to-back, and Arsenal are going to try and do that.

“It’s going to be a tough season, but at the moment you have to say wow, they look head and shoulders [above the rest] at the moment.”

Having ended a 22-year wait to win the Premier League ahead of Man City last season, Arsenal will be hoping to defend their title this campaign.
