Super Falcons suffered a shocking 3-2 defeat to Women’s Africa Cup of Nations debutants Malawi in their first group game.

The Super Falcons defeated Zambia 1-0 in their second Group C game of the ongoing 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) to keep their campaign alive.
The reigning champions had suffered a shocking 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi in their opening group match.
Zambia, on the other hand, began their WAFCON campaign on an impressive note, thrashing the Cleopatras of Egypt 6-0.
This meant Nigeria had to secure maximum points against the Copper Queens to get their campaign back on track.

The Super Falcons broke the deadlock as early as the eighth minute through Asisat Oshoala at the Al Madina Stadium.
Justine Madugu’s side were, however, forced to protect their lead for more than half the match after Oluwatosin Demehin was sent off in the 40th minute.
Zambia pushed for an equaliser after the break, but the 10-woman Super Falcons held firm to claim three crucial points in Group C.
The victory keeps Nigeria’s semi-final hopes alive after Malawi’s 3-1 victory over Egypt earlier in the day had left the champions under even greater pressure.
