Nathaniel is the first Nigerian athlete to win a gold on the track at the 2026 Commonwealth Games taking place in Glasgow, Scotland.

Nigerian hurdler Ezekiel Nathaniel on Friday night clinched gold in the 400m hurdles final of the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland.
The 23-year-old stormed to a resounding victory in 48.47s, beating England’s Jake Minshull, who ran 48.99s for silver, while Jamaica’s Assinie Wilson came third in 49.22s.
With this historic victory, he became the first Nigerian to win the gold medal in the men’s 400 metres hurdles at the Games.

Nathaniel’s gold is also Nigeria’s first on the track in Glasgow after favourites like Tobi Amusan and Kayinsola Ajayi both ended up with bronze medals in their respective events.
The closest the West African nation had previously come to winning the men’s 400m hurdles at the CWG was in 1966, when Kingsley Agbabokha won a silver medal.
At the time, the event was referred to by its antiquated name of the 440-yard hurdles.
