UNIJOS graduate lynched in Jos to be buried Thursday
Ibrahim Mbaya, a University of Jos (UNIJOS) graduate who was allegedly beaten to death by a mob in Jos, Plateau State, will be buried on Thursday, according to his family.
His younger brother, James Mbaya, told Punch that arrangements were underway to transport the remains of the 25-year-old to their hometown in Hawul Local Government Area of Borno State for burial.
“We are making arrangements for his corpse to be brought home. He will be buried on Thursday,” James said.
He said the tragedy had deeply affected the family, particularly their parents, describing Ibrahim as the first child and first son whose future carried enormous expectations.
“His (Ibrahim) death has really devastated us, especially our parents. I don’t think they are ever going to recover from the shock of his death because he was the first child and the first male child of the family. We had great expectations from him.
“He had a lot of dreams that were unachieved. We are really disheartened about his death, but there is nothing we can do about it again; we just have to take it in good faith and hope that justice is done,” James added.
James described his late brother as a model, dancer, and entrepreneur who had hoped to establish a fashion house and a restaurant before his life was cut short.
The family also appealed to the police to ensure that all those responsible for the killing are prosecuted.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday at an off-campus apartment located behind the City of David area along Ring Road in Jos.
Confirming the development, the Plateau State Police Command said three suspects — Rinji Daniel Fwanji, Emmanuel Newyear, and Nensemka Fwanji — had been arrested in connection with the alleged culpable homicide.
Police sources said Mbaya, who was based in Jos, attended a social gathering and later spent the night at a friend’s apartment because it was too late for him to return home.
The following morning, the friend allegedly discovered that an iPhone was missing and accused Mbaya of being responsible, claiming they were the only two people in the apartment.
Although Mbaya initially left the premises, reports said he later returned after being asked to come back and explain himself.
According to the police, he was then confronted by his friend and a group of youths who accused him of stealing the phone.
Investigators said witnesses alleged that the group beat him with sticks and other objects for several hours in an attempt to force a confession until he became unconscious.
A nurse who later examined him reportedly confirmed that he was dead.
