Malawi are playing for the first time in their history in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Nigeria’s Super Falcons on Tuesday night suffered a stunning 3-2 defeat against tournament debutants Malawi in their opening Group C match of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The Chawinga sisters spearheaded the Southern African nation’s historic win over the defending champions in a match played in Rabat, Morocco.
Malawi opened the scoring in the 73rd minute through Temwa Chawinga, and her sister, Tabitha Chawinga, doubled their advantage six minutes later.

Nigeria, however, attempted a stoppage-time comeback through a penalty converted by captain Rasheedat Ajibade.
While the Nigerian girls were pushing for an equaliser, Temwa hit them with a sucker punch, scoring her second goal to make it 3-1 to the Malawians.
Uchenna Kanu got a late second goal to give Nigeria a fighting chance, but Malawi held on to secure a vital three points.
The 2026 WAFCON will serve as the qualification tournament for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
