Athletes from Akwa Ibom State were among the first contingents to arrive in the nation’s commercial capital, followed closely by their counterparts from Kwara State.

Several elite athletes have also touched down in Lagos, adding further quality and anticipation to what promises to be a highly competitive event.

The atmosphere around the athletics community is already building, with key officials of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) also arriving in the city.

AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, alongside members of the federation’s Technical Committee, are expected to oversee preparations and ensure a smooth conduct of the trials.

Technical equipment required for the competition has also started arriving in Lagos as organisers intensify efforts to deliver a successful championship.

The National Institute for Sports (NIS) at the National Stadium, Surulere, is currently serving as the transit camp for early arrivals, providing accommodation and logistical support for athletes and officials before the commencement of activities.

Meanwhile, the official AFN camp for qualified athletes is scheduled to open on June 19, where final preparations will begin ahead of the three-day trials.

The Commonwealth Games Trials are expected to attract some of the country’s finest track and field talents as athletes battle for national team spots and the opportunity to represent Nigeria on the international stage.

With top stars, emerging talents and federation officials all converging on Lagos, the countdown has truly begun for what is expected to be one of the most keenly contested athletics events of the year.
