RULAAC demands probe as activist Justice Crack alleges Army torture, damaged vehicle in DSS custody

By Ishaya Ibrahim

The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has condemned the alleged torture and destruction of property suffered by activist and social commentator Justice Crack while in custody of Nigerian security agencies.

In a statement Wednesday, June 10, 2026, signed by Executive Director Okechukwu Nwanguma, RULAAC said Justice Crack was subjected to “cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment” after his alleged unlawful abduction by personnel of the Nigerian Army on April 28, 2026.

According to the group, the activist was held for three days blindfolded and handcuffed. He alleged he was exposed to intense heat without water during the day, freezing conditions at night, and physically assaulted. RULAAC said the psychological trauma continues to affect him after his release on bail.

The group said the abuse was linked to Justice Crack’s advocacy for better welfare, feeding and care for rank-and-file soldiers. “This raises serious concerns about the shrinking space for freedom of expression and the willingness of security institutions to tolerate criticism,” RULAAC stated.

RULAAC said Justice Crack discovered his vehicle was severely damaged when he went to the Department of State Services (DSS) facility Tuesday to retrieve it. The vehicle had been in custody since his abduction, the statement noted. The group described the damage as “malicious destruction of property” that compounds the injustice.

“Torture and malicious damage to property are serious violations that cannot and must not go unchallenged,” the statement read.

RULAAC called for an independent, transparent and impartial investigation into the abduction, detention and treatment of Justice Crack. It also demanded accountability for officials responsible for torture, unlawful detention, assault or destruction of property, and full compensation for the violations including damage to the vehicle and psychological harm.

The group urged civil society organizations, lawyers and citizens to join calls for accountability, saying “Nigeria cannot build strong institutions on a foundation of impunity. Justice for Justice Crack is justice for every Nigerian whose rights and dignity deserve protection.”

RULAAC said it stands ready to support lawful efforts to secure justice in the matter.
