The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has pledged to provide the regulatory leadership, technical coordination, and stakeholder engagement needed to develop and implement a robust National Maritime Decarbonisation Action Plan for Nigeria.
NIMASA Director-General Dr. Dayo Mobereola made the commitment during a National Stakeholders’ Workshop on the development of the plan, describing the event as a critical step toward realizing the Federal Government’s blue economy and climate objectives.
Represented by Executive Director of Operations Engr. Fatai Taiye Adeyemi, Dr. Mobereola highlighted the importance of the IMO GreenVoyage2050 Project—a technical cooperation initiative supporting developing countries in implementing the IMO’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Strategy.
He noted that the National Action Plan (NAP) would reflect Nigeria’s unique realities, leverage existing capacities, address identified gaps, and align with broader national economic and environmental priorities.
“This transition is not merely about compliance with international obligations,” Dr. Mobereola stressed. “It is about safeguarding our marine environment, protecting public health, strengthening the blue economy, and ensuring that our maritime industry remains competitive and future-ready.”
Technical Manager of the IMO GreenVoyage2050 Project, Astrid Dispert, also addressed the workshop, stating that the initiative aims to advance a coherent, globally aligned regulatory framework to accelerate maritime decarbonisation. She emphasized NIMASA’s pivotal role in driving the project nationally.
The IMO GreenVoyage2050 Project offers technical expertise and institutional support to help countries develop and implement NAPs that promote sustainable shipping practices, encourage investment in clean technologies, and build long-term capacity for emissions reduction.
Through this collaboration, the Federal Government is taking deliberate steps toward maritime decarbonisation, reinforcing its commitment to global climate goals and securing a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for the sector.
