Afrobeats star Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, has revealed that she faced significant challenges before finding fame, noting that she was once booed off stage while performing at a school event.

She made the disclosure during a recent interview with Big Boy TV while recounting the early-career obstacles she encountered.

According to the ‘Crazy Tings’ singer, the audience did not stop at booing; they also harassed her by throwing plastic bottles at her.

Recalling the incident during the chat, Tems said: “I remember one time I was going to perform at my school as an up-and-coming singer, and I thought I was going to receive a standing ovation.

“But I got booed. They even threw plastic bottles at me.”

She added, however, that despite the embarrassing incident and similar rejections, she remained determined to pursue a career in music.

The Grammy-winning artist further admitted that some of the initial pushback she faced may have been due to her conviction to stick to her original sound, rather than performing covers or familiar genres like many of her peers.

Looking back now, Tems expressed gratitude that she did not compromise her style despite the initial pressure to conform.
