Mosquitoes and Africa
By Abraham E. Nwankwo
They bite and torment man with scorn.
Malaria the killer insect widely cause,
By distributing poison across the land,
With serious social and economic costs.
Yet many a government in Africa,
Does not the problem seriously address.
Conducive breeding culture they find,
In stagnant gutters with fecal and other wastes,
From ill-directed drainage pipes,
In African cities badly planned.
Chemical spraying of gutters, pools and swamps,
Would have helped control the pests.
But many of the powers that be
Fail to respond alert and aright.
Leaving the giant land in painful bondage,
To the tiny pests that come from hell.
Yet the war cannot be won,
But by a co-operation of forces.
