A Nigerian Navy officer, Lieutenant A.M. Yarima, who recently had an altercation with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, reportedly escaped an assassination attempt on Sunday evening in Abuja.
According to Vanguard, two unmarked Hilux vans with no number plates, conveying men dressed in black, trailed Yarima from the NIPCO Filling Station off the Airport Road Expressway to Gado Nasco Way.
A source, however, said the officer noticed the surveillance and executed a “strategic maneuver,” which enabled him to evade the suspected assailants at around 6:30 p.m.
“The matter is already under investigation and is receiving the seriousness it deserves,” the source added, explaining that further details are being withheld for security reasons and to avoid jeopardizing the inquiry.
The incident comes barely a week after Lieutenant Yarima was verbally attacked by the FCT Minister following the heated encounter at a disputed demolition site in the Gaduwa District of Abuja.
The exchange, which was caught on video, divided opinion among Nigerians: while some condemned the young officer, others chided the FCT Minister for calling him a “fool.”
