Opuana cautions critics to allow AFN to focus on Athletes’ welfare, performance in Nigeria
Renowned hammer thrower, Gabriel Opuana has called upon detractors to refrain from disparaging the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and instead focus on fostering sports development in Nigeria
Opuana demanded an absolute cessation of hostilities by those he described as crusaders of falsehood in Nigeria, whom he claimed have benefited and continue to benefit from sports in the country.
“It is deplorable and utterly disappointing that critics from television, newspapers, and radio, who are not actively involved in sports administration, fail to recognize the achievements of other sports administrators except when they are in charge,” he said.
The former Nigeria’s US athletes liaison official stressed that while it is necessary to expose and address corruption in sports, it is also important to praise and encourage those making significant contributions to sports in Nigeria.
“The AFN needs sponsors to support athletes welfare and performance, but detractors are bent on scaring them away, which must stop,” he said.
