Commuters resort to long walks as repairs ground traffic to a standstill

Frequent traffic tail-backs on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway took a more harrowing turn on Tuesday as commuters on the Berger/Odo-Ona Kekere Bridge corridor could not bear a four-hour standstill and had to resort to long walks (footwagen).

Commuters lamented trekking long distances and transporters on daily wage counted the naira and kobo lost in several hours gridlock.

The chaos that blocked both sides of the expressway arose from the ongoing rehabilitation of bad portions of the road at Guru Maharaj-ji Village and other areas.

Vehicular movement was restricted to a single lane on either side which paralysed free flow.

Some motorists said they stood on the same spot for close to four hours, blaming the logjam on the insensitivity of the contractor, Reynolds Construction Company (RCC), to the plight of the road users.

“This road has been like this for months. Why is it now that they are thinking of fixing it? With a few days to the Sallah celebration, they ought to have known that the volume of the traffic will be higher,” a motorist complained.

Another lamented that “I don’t know the exact time that I will leave this spot. I left Lagos for Ibadan at 10.23am. It is now 4 pm, and there is no hope in sight. Our leaders are not plying the road, hence they are less concerned.”
