Wike: I wanted Fubara removed but Tinubu’s intervention saved him

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has admitted he sought the complete removal of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara but acknowledged that President Bola Tinubu’s intervention changed the course of events.

Speaking during a media chat in Abuja on Friday, Wike said that although he personally disagreed with the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, it was the president’s decision that ultimately spared Fubara.

“As a politician, I am not happy about the state of emergency in Rivers State,” Wike stated. “I wanted the outright removal of Governor Fubara. The president, by declaring a state of emergency, saved Fubara.”

On March 18, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers and suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy and members of the state House of Assembly following political unrest in the state.

According to Wike, the governor was already on the brink of losing his position before the president stepped in.

“The governor was gone. He was gone, yes,” he emphasised. “So when people say the president did this, I say they should be praising him. Every morning, they should go to the president and ask, ‘Can we wash your feet for saving us?’”
