Former Liverpool defender, Stephen Warnock has claimed that Manchester United’s hierarchy is “scapegoating” English striker, Marcus Rashford, because of his huge wage.

He made his feelings on the future of the England star known recently while speaking on Sky Sports.

His comments followed Rashford’s  omission from the squad that defeated Manchester City a few days ago and his absence during Ruben Amorim team’s 3-0 loss to Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

Addressing the developments, Warnock insisted that the Red Devils’ chiefs are attempting to cut costs by making life difficult for Rashford, who is among the top earners at the club.

Speaking during the interview, he said: “He [Rashford] has come out and obviously made the statement. What we’ve seen behind the scenes is there’s a lot of cost-cutting. But what we also know is he’s potentially their biggest earner.”

Warnock added, “Now, is that the ownership coming in and saying, ‘Absolutely not, we’re going to set this wage structure, and we’re going to make sure we bring that down. He’s the first one who’s got to go?’

“So how do you do that? You frustrate a player. You make life difficult for him. I’ve been in that situation where someone has come in and said, ‘You’re not the player for me.’

“And I get the sense that he’s being forced out of the club, and he’s being made the scapegoat.”

Marcus Rashford’s future at Manchester United is currently uncertain after he admitted he was “ready for a new challenge,” hinting at a potential exit from Old Trafford.
