Average intercity journey cost rises 21.26% YoY

Average intercity journey cost rises highest in Anambra

Average fare for bus journeys between cities rose to N7,175.06 in September 2024, a 0.22 per cent hike month-on-month (MoM) on August 2024 and 21.26 per cent jump year-on-year (YoY) versus N5,917.16 in September 2023, according to the latest figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

NBS Transport Fare Watch Report for September 2024 explained that “the average fare paid by commuters for intercity bus journeys per drop was N7,175.06 in September 2024, indicating an increase of 0.22% on a month-on-month basis compared to N7,159.00 in August 2024. On a year-on-year basis, the fare rose by 21.26% from N5,917.16 in September 2023.”

Anambra saw the highest intercity bus travel cost (state route charged per person) at N9,587.27 in September, followed by Gombe (N8,330.05). Kwara came in at lowest (N5,579.42), next, Ebonyi at N5,611.06.

Intracity fares

Average cost of intracity bus journeys rose 3.45 per cent MoM from August to September 2024 but declined 32.38 YoY.

Zamfara witnessed the highest fare rise, Adamawa the lowest.

Other transportation modes

Air fares increased 0.80 per cent MoM and 57.81 per cent YoY.

Average motorcycle taxi (Okada) ride fare inched up 1.48 per cent MoM but slashed 26.04 per cent YoY.

Water transport fares saw a 1.30 per cent rise MoM and 4.36 YoY.

The highest motorcycle transport fare was recorded in Lagos (N927.07), the lowest in Anambra (N318.95). Water transport cost jumped highest in Bayelsa (N4,573.16), lowest in Borno (N471.01).

Travel cost by region

The South South saw the highest average bus fare at N7,673.87 against N7,351.05 in the South East and N6,886.06 in the North Central.

The South West had the highest cost of intracity bus journeys and airfares, the South East the lowest.

The South West also led in motorcycle fares, the South East also the lowest.

The South South had the highest water transport cost, followed by the South West, with the North East recording the least.
