Bill seeking creation of Ogoja State passes second reading in House of Reps

Ogoja State’ bill if passed into law, will bring the number of states in the South-south region of Nigeria to seven

A bill seeking the creation of an additional state named Ogoja has scaled the second reading in the House of Representatives

The proposed legislation was sponsored by the House of Reps member representing Cross River State, Godwin Offiono and three other federal lawmakers.

The bill is seeking the amendment of the 1999 Constitution to give room for the creation of an additional state in the South-south region.

Moving the motion, Offiono said the “essence of this bill is rested on equity.”

The bill when put to a voice vote by the Speaker of the house, Tajudeen Abbas on Thursday scaled the second reading without any opposition from members and was referred to the House Committee on Constitution Review.

If passed into law, it would bring the number of states in the South-south region to seven.

The bill seeking the creation of Ogoja State adds to the plethora of bills seeking to create new states in Nigeria.
