A Shari’ah Court in Kura, Kano State has sentenced one Haruna Abdulkarim to 10 strokes of cane for falsely claiming to be a Christian and faking conversion to Islam.

Abdulkarim, 25, a resident of Koguna Ward in Makoda Council, was apprehended by Hisbah personnel (religious police) in Kura Council following a tip-off.

He had been attending both daily and Friday Muslim congregational prayers, pretending to be a Christian wanting to embrace Islam, and soliciting funds under the guise of almsgiving.

His actions prompted the Hisbah Commander in Kura Council Ali Alkasim Kura to order his arrest and transfer him to police for further investigation.

Abdulkarim was arraigned in court where he confessed to the offence and claimed debt pushed him to it. He pleaded for leniency, vowing not to engage in such deceitful act again.

The court sentenced him to 10 strokes of cane and cautioned that any recurrence of the offence would result in the harshest penalty.

After the judgment, Abdulkarim appealed for forgiveness from all Muslims, particularly those who had supported him. He promised not to engage in such behaviour again, and expressed his intention to seek guidance from Islamic scholars to deepen his religious understanding.
