Supreme Court finally releases certified copies of judgment on Nnamdi Kanu

By Jeffrey Agbo

After more than one month of delivering judgment, the Supreme Court has now released the certified true copies of its judgment in the case of the Federal Government against Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Mr Kanu’s special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, made this known in a post on X on Monday night.

“Today, the Supreme Court released the CTC of its judgment in ‘Federal Republic of Nigeria versus Nnamdi Kanu’. The Court also promised to transmit the case file to the Federal High Court by tomorrow.

“Sooner than later, we shall lock horns at the Federal High Court to #FreeMNK,” he wrote.

In a post on Tuesday, Ejimakor advised President Bola Tinubu to treat Kanu’s case with caution.

“For Ndigbo, Tinubu’s presidency will be defined by how he handles the matter of MAZI NNAMDI KANU. Anybody telling Tinubu otherwise is mischievous & nudging the President to a path of bitter political conflict with Ndigbo. Believe it or not, #MNK is one of the pantheons of Ndigbo,” he noted.

On December 15, 2023, the apex court ordered the continuation of Kanu’s trial on terrorism charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The case which started in 2015 had been put on hold at the high court after the Court of Appeal dismissed the charges in a judgment delivered in October 2022 on the illegality of the “extraordinary rendition” of Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria in June 2021 to continue his trial.

But the appellate court ordered a stay of execution of its judgment after the Federal Government took the case to the Supreme Court.

The trial at the Federal High Court is expected to resume soon.
