Veteran Olympian explains reason for promoting grassroots Athletics

Princess Mabel Madojiemu School’s Athletics Championships has been slated to hold between April 25-26 in Benin City, Edo State.

School kids who have long awaited the return of the competition are looking forward to the date when they will display their athletics prowess at the Samuel bi Ogbemudia Stadium Benin City.

“Registration of schools will soon be in progress, between now and April we expect a number of grassroots athletes to participate,” said coach Mutiu Oluwa technical director of the championships.

After two editions, the Princess Mabel Madojiemu School’s Athletics Championships has produced a number of trainable young athletes some of whom participated in the National Youth Games last year in Asaba, Delta State.

“That’s the essence of the championships and hopefully the third edition competition with throw up fresh talents,” said Princess Madojiemu.

“I would like to repeat that it was through such grassroots programme that I was discovered and grew up to represent Nigeria.”

Princess Madojiemu who participated in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece reiterated her commitment to discover them young programme going with the hope that there would be more resources to make it a national competition in the near future
