Ya’u Jatau, husband of Rhoda Jatau, the woman who was jailed over a comment she made against the murder of Deborah Samuel by a religious mob, has expressed excitement over her release.

Mrs Jatau was released from a Bauchi prison on Friday following interventions by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Nigeria Inter-Religious Council, (NIREC), and Christian Solidarity Worldwide Nigeria.

The Bauchi healthcare worker has been in custody since May 20, 2022 on charges of blasphemy.

According to a report by Vanguard Newspaper, NIREC played a key role in her release, highlighting the importance of the inter-religious council in such matters.

“Following the outcry from the Christian community in Nigeria over the continued detention of Rhoda Jatau in Bauchi Prison, the Christian Association of Nigeria, the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council, and Christian Solidarity Worldwide Nigeria intervened in the matter.

“We have high hopes that the case will end in praise. Let’s continue to keep her in our prayers. The leadership of NIREC played a key role. Praise be to our God,” the source said.

Reacting to his wife’s release, Mr Jatau told PUNCH on Saturday: “I feel very, very happy that my wife has been released and is back home. I cannot thank God enough. I want to thank everyone who made this happen. That is all I can say at the moment.”
