Shehu Sani also noted that democracy cannot survive if political interests override constitutional obligations

Human rights activist and former federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani has described the ongoing Kano State governorship election saga as a grenade that must be handled with the utmost care.
A Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja recently upheld the decision of the Kano State election petition tribunal, which nullified the victory of Governor Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
The three-member panel, led by Justice Moore Adumein, declared Nasiru Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the rightful winner of the 18 March governorship election in the State.
However, contrary to what was widely reported, an alleged certified copy of the Appeal Court judgement making the rounds on social media suggests the written judgement, set aside the judgement of the Kano election petition tribunal for lacking merit.
As contained in page 67 of the alleged copy of the Appeal Court judgement seen on Tuesday and signed by the registrar, Jameel Ibrahim Umar, the appellate court upheld the victory of Gov Yusuf.
Addressing journalists on Tuesday evening, the Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Dederi said page 67 of the certified copy of the judgement clearly indicated that the tribunal’s ruling that sacked Governor Yusuf was set aside.

Reacting to the development via his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter) Shehu Sani noted that an alleged Court of Appeal CTC judgement in circulation affirmed the victory of the serving Governor.
He went on to urge caution in handling the ongoing gubernatorial tussle in Kano State.
According to the former senator, “democracy cannot survive when political interests override moral and constitutional obligations”.
Taking to his social media page, he tweeted: “Kano: the Court of Appeal CTC judgement in circulation clearly affirmed the victory of the serving Governor.
“The Kano matter is a grenade and the pin must be handled with the utmost care. Our democracy cannot survive when political interests override our moral and constitutional obligations to uphold the cause and the tenets of justice.”
