Buhari speaks on troops ambushed during Niger operation

Buhari, in a statement on Saturday signed by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, also sent his condolences to President Bola Tinubu over the Niger tragedy.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has condoled with the military and the Nigerian people over the death of several soldiers killed in an ambush and a subsequent helicopter crash in Niger State.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) revealed on Thursday that three officers and 22 soldiers were killed in an ambush and the crash of a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) MI17 helicopter on Monday in Niger State.

Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, told journalists that a total of 36 officers and soldiers were involved in the two incidents.

According to him, seven military personnel were wounded in action.

“I am saddened by the helicopter accident, following the tragic ambush in which we have lost our brave army personnel. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I hope those injured recover at the earliest.

“My heartfelt condolences to the President, @officialABAT, the Armed Forces of the Federation, and the families of the deceased.

“With the soldier-discipline in our troops, it is a matter of time before they overcome,” the former President said.
