Nigerians won’t ‘japa’, they will stay back and develop their country, he says

Infectious “japa” syndrome forcing Nigerians to flee their country under the misrule of Muhammadu Buhari will end with a new dispensation of responsible governance from 29 May “if I am elected President,” says Obi.

He made the pledge to an enthusiastic crowd in Akure at the weekend, reiterating Nigeria is not secure and people are living in suffering and hunger.

Obi, accompanied by his Labour Party (LP) presidential running mate Datti Baba-Ahmed, promised to recruit more police and military personnel and insure them so they could lay down their lives for the country.

He also promised to support small businesses to ensure folks are not forced to leave their communities because of insecurity.

“We guarantee you that insecurity will stop. We want to change Nigeria for better. We want to move Nigeria from consumption to production.

“We don’t want people to run out of Nigeria again. We want to restructure Nigeria for development. We want to build a better Nigeria, so go out and support us,” Obi said, per Vanguard.

“We want to fight corruption. We will make sure that we have electricity. The whole South of Ondo State has not seen electricity for several years, how can there be development?

“Pick your PVCs and vote for Labour Party and make sure that they count the vote. I am the only Governor that left good money.”

Obi took a swing at All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Bola Tinubu for calling him stingy, a tag he wore as an honour to press home his message.

Tinubu had asserted at his own rally in Akure earlier in the week that “all he [Obi] could do was boast that he saved money. But I tell you it is a wicked parent that holds money in his hand yet allows his children to starve.

“My people, you cannot entrust your future or that of our nation to Mr Sell Everything Atiku or Mr Stingy Obi. But you can trust Mr Progressive Good Governance Tinubu!”

Obi in his reply urged the electorate not to vote for tribe but look for character, stressing he and Baba-Ahmed have traceable backgrounds, and if they are elected, Nigerians would be proud of their country and feel secure.

Stingy but not corrupt

Obi explained he is stingy but not corrupt, which was why he could save for the people of Anambra when he was Governor for eight years, from 2006 to 2014.

“Yes, they said l am stingy, but we are not out to steal the nation’s wealth; all we want to do is to use the nation’s money for our people and development of this country,” he added, according to reporting by Vanguard.

“They said that I’m stingy, we want stingy people now so that we can keep the money. We want to make sure we use your money to transform the country.

“This election that is coming now, don’t vote for anybody because of the tribe but vote for someone that will move the country forward.

“This election is about character and people we can trust. Everybody knows the schools my running mate and I attended. You all know our age, our schools and everything about us. Our backgrounds are known.”
