The Clarets and Blues before the encounter had only won two games in the Premier League this season and they only sit above the relegation zone on goals difference.

Steven Gerrard, who managed Scottish side, Rangers, was appointed as the Aston Villa coach in November 2021 after Dean Smith was sacked by the club.

Since then, the former England and Liverpool midfielder won 13 games out of the 40 in the 11 months he was in charge of the club.

After the defeat by Fulham, he told BBC Match of the Day that his team lost the game because they have been inconsistent in the league.

He went on to say that the club has tried to recruit players to solve the problem but all to no avail, saying he was ready to fight for his job.

Gerrard said, “Inconsistency has cost us, that’s the position we find ourselves in. I took over the team in a very similar situation. We’ve tried to recruit to get us out of that situation.

“I’m a fighter – it’s in my DNA. I’ll continued to fight unless I’m told differently.”

However, an hour after the heavy defeat to Fulham, his time as Villa boss was over, as he was given the boot by the Premier Lague club.

Confirming his sack, a club spokesman said: “We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and commitment and wish him well for the future.”
