Man defecates in mosque over N20,000 bet, lands in Sharia Court

The offence of defecating in a mosque is a grievous one, almost akin to blasphemy, especially in Kaduna where it occurred.

A man has landed in a Sharia Court after pulling through a bet of defecating in a mosque.

The stake was N20,000 if he caries out the riskiest action in the Northern part of Nigeria. He did.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, a Sharia Court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State on Thursday ordered that Nura Usman and Adamu Dauda be remanded in a correctional facility for the offence of the defecation in the mosque a place believed to be sacred by Muslims.

According to the charge sheet, the police arraigned  Usman and Dauda with public nuisance and inciting violence.

The Judge, Malam Rilwanu Kyaudai, adjourned the case until April 28 for the police to present witnesses

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Ibrahim Shuaibu, said that Usman and Dauda were handed over to the Tudun Wada Police station on April 11 by members of the community.

He said that Usman was caught defecating in a mosque located on Alkalawa road, Tudun Wada Kaduna around 2 p.m after Dauda, the second defendant, promised to give Usman N20, 000 if he defecates in the mosque.

They pleaded not guilty.

A mosque also called masjid, is a place of worship for Muslims. Any act of worship that follows the Islamic rules of prayer can be said to create a mosque, whether or not it takes place in a special building.

Informal and open-air places of worship are called musalla, while mosques used for communal prayer on Friday are known as jāmiʿ. Mosque buildings typically contain an ornamental niche (mihrab) set into the wall that indicates the direction of Mecca (qiblah), ablution facilities and minarets from which calls to prayer are issued
