Harry Kane scored a penalty in the first half and had another goal disallowed in the second half, as Tottenham were held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium.

After Ben Davies had a potential opener ruled offside, Southampton opened the scoring in the 25th minute after Tottenham failed to deal with a long throw-in, which Ward-Prowse brilliantly fired past Hugo Lloris.

The home side were dealt a huge blow 15 minutes later when Mohammed Salisu was sent packing by the referee after he collected a second yellow for tripping  Son Heung-min inside the penalty box. Kane stepped up and dispatched the resultant spot-kick to make it 1-1 at the break.

Kane thought he had completed the turnaround in the second half when he scored a second goal from a through pass from Harry Winks, but VAR intervened and ruled it offside.

The draw means Antonio Conte remains unbeaten in his opening seven games as Spurs manager – the first to do so in the club’s history – but he stayed 6th after  West Ham leapfrogging them into 5th place after beating struggling Watford 4-1.

Meanwhile, Southampton moved one place up to 13th, and 10 points clear of the relegation zone after earning 4 points in two straight games against two quality oppositions.

Tottenham defender Eric Dier said he was disappointed that they drew against a team that played 50 minutes of the encounter with 10 men.

He said.”Disappointed especially after they went down to 10 men we’ve got to win the game and we couldn’t do that.

“They defended very well and fought for each other but that doesn’t matter from our side of it. We have to be able to break them down. We weren’t good enough at doing that.

“We’ve got to keep things in perspective. Everyone can see the progression.

“I’m enjoying learning how to play in this system.”

However, an elated Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse told Amazon that their aggressive game paid off

“We wanted to play an aggressive style of play and Sali is an aggressive player. We had to make sure we were stuck in.

“It’s not easy with a lot of games but we need to get as many points as we can,” he said
