Nigerians have expressed shock over a $1.2 billion loan request by the Federal Government from Brazil to finance the government’s agricultural programmes captured in the 2021 budget.
Zainab Ahmed Shamsuna, Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning had told the House of Representatives Committee on Finance during her budget defence on November 3 that the loan from Brazil would assist the federal government to address issues in the agriculture value chain.
Reno Omokri who was a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on social media, said in a tweet that: “General @MBuhari and his crew are just a shameless bunch. They have over begged and over borrowed from China, Europe and America. And now, they are going to beg and borrow from Brazil. Don’t be surprised if they beg and borrow from Ghana next!”
Seun Onigbinde, the head of BudGiT, a data analytical firm, simply said: “After Brazil, let’s do Trinidad & Tobago.”
@_Alexander_King queried: “We’re now borrowing money from Brazil? Even Brazil?”
@drpenking argued: “Brazil is a third world country. When will another country borrow from Nigeria?”
