Despite court ruling, judiciary workers begin strike Monday

-

All Federal High Courts in Nigeria will be under lock and key, says judiciary workers. Their reason is that they would be protesting the increment in the price of fuel and electricity tariff.

This decision is against a court ruling which barred the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) from proceeding with the planned strike on Monday, September 28.

The judiciary workers say the September 28 strike, will run for two weeks.

Already, notices announcing the strike by the judiciary workers have been pasted around the Federal High Court Headquarters building in Abuja by the court staff, under the aegis of  the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN).

The judiciary workers said they expected 100 per cent compliance from all their members to abandon their duties and cue with the industrial action plan of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC).

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report says the notice, reads: “Please be informed that the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Federal High Court chapter shall, in collaboration with the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), commences a two-week indefinite strike action from Monday the 28th day of September, 2020.

“All offices shall remain closed within this period. You are required to comply.”

The NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have said that they would be embarking on a strike action to protest the fuel and electricity tariff increment after negotiation with the federal government collapsed.

The federal government has however, secured an order of the National Industrial Court against the strike action.

The industrial court explicitly asks the NLC and the TUC to halt their intention to embark on the industrial action in protect of the increment in the prices of electricity and petroleum products.

It is still not clear if the NLC and the TUC will comply with the order. The judiciary workers have given the indication that they are not complying.
