The battle line is drawn at GTBank Masters Cup season 4 as Onikan Stadium, Lagos is set to match the ground for Western College, Yaba and St Gregory’s College Obalende in an all trilling semifinal today, Friday June 12, 2015 by 2pm.
Western College, Yaba has been participating in the GTBank Masters Cup since inception but they have not gotten past the semifinal round of the tournament.
This season, they will be playing St. Gregory’s College, Obalende at the semifinals. Western College emerged top of Group-D after winning all their matches and scoring 10 goals in the process, five of the goals were scored by their prolific striker, Ekene Jebefume.
At the quarterfinals, they faced stiff opposition from C.M.S Grammar School, Bariga whom they defeated on penalties after the dramatic game ended 3-3 in regulation time. Ekene got a hat trick in that game and inspired his team to victory.
But St. Gregory’s College will be a tough nut to crack. They emerged tops from their group, which had heavy weights like the former champions, Eko Boys, Mushin and Baptist Academy, Obanikoro. They went ahead to defeat old rivals Kings College, Lagos 4-1 at the quarterfinals. The St. Gregory’s team is technically sound and also sharp on the attack. Their lead striker Obi David has gotten 2 hat tricks in this competition and has a total of 8 goals thus far, making him the joint top scorer of the tournament with Ekene Jebefume.
But this does not faze Western College. According to their striker Ekene, he said, “I will score against St. Gregory’s College and we will win the trophy”. He is very optimistic that they will emerge victorious when they face the Obalende Boys.
In other encounter of the day, Queens College, Yaba will slog it out with Ansar UD-Deem College, Isolo in the female encounter.
The stadium is set and wide open, fans are trooping in to Onikan Arena to support their own. While working on their past not to hunt them, Will Western College break the Semi-Final jinx this season? Who will outshine each other – Ekene or David? Surely, this GTBank Master Cup semifinal fixture promises to be a cracker and a must-watch.
