In a message sent to his telegram channel, founder Pavel Durov, wrote, “I see 3 million new users signedup for telegram within the last 24 hours.”

On Wednesday, Facebook and its family of apps, including Messenger and WhatsApp, went down for most of Wednesday, which may have prompted the spike in the migration to the Telegram platform.

A contact at Telegram confirmed to TechCrunch that the Facebook apps’ downtime is the likely cause of its latest sign up spike, saying “These outages always drive new users.”

Last year, Telegram announced it has seen over 200 million daily active users on its platform, though the it has seen restrictions in a number of countries like China, Russia and Iran.
