The Benue State Police Command said it has rescued a two-year-old child, Bemdoo Ajekwe, who was kidnapped at the North Bank area of Makurdi, the state capital, by the suspected kidnappers.
The criminals, whom the police identified as Joy Onyeabor (32 years) and Lucy Doosuur (29 years), were arrested on October 10 this year after the case of a missing child was reported to the command which prompted a full scale investigation during which the kidnappers were arrested.
Commissioner of Police, Ene Okon, said that both the suspects confessed to the crime.
“The suspects both confessed that the said child was on that fateful day in company of his older brother who is about seven years old when they lured the older child with the sum of N50 to help them buy bread across the road leaving the younger child in their care before they whisked him to Aba in Abia State.
“They stated that they sold the child to one Unwa Chibueze and Elizabeth whose surname is unknown at the cost of N500, 000”.
The CP, said in a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Moses Yamu, that further investigation into the matter led to the arrest of other members of the syndicate including a 26-year-old Sunday Udoh and Friday Orinya (33 years) all of North Bank area of Makurdi who actively participated in the crime.
He said Police detectives extended investigation to Aba in Abia State and recovered /rescued the child, Bemdoo Ajekwe, on October 23, and noted that the child has since been reunited to the family while investigation continues with a view to arrest other fleeing members of the syndicate.
Okon restated the commitment of the command to ensure that no stone was left unturned in ridding the state of crime and criminals.
