The Senate Committee on Works has warned contractors handling federal government projects to be serious or face sanction.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, gave the warning when the committee visited Bauchi Governor Mohammed Abubakar in his office yesterday.
He also frowned at the contractor (name withheld) handling the Gombe-Bauchi federal road, saying, “the contractor should be serious with its contract because he has already collected N3 billion as mobilization to the site without anything to show for the money collected”.
The Committee, which was on its constitutional “over-sight” duty to the Northeast geopolitical area visited Adamawa, Taraba, Gombe from where it arrived Bauchi.
According to Gaya, the road projects the committee inspected in Bauchi were in Azare, Bogoro, Dass, Misau, Udubo, and Zaki.
The projects are spread across the three Senatorial districts in the state.
On the Dass federal road, Gaya noted, “if the road is completed it will link up Jalingo (Taraba state), Gombe, Bauchi, and Plateau state unto Abuja for more socio-economic activities”.
Responding, Bauchi State, Governor Mohammed Abubakar, represented by the state’s Deputy Governor, Mr. Nuhu Gidado, commended the Committee,but complained that “the passage of heavy duty vehicles on township roads is dangerous and reducing the life span of the roads”.
He appealed to the Committee to assist state governments in their quest to construct inter-state roads.
He also reiterated the Governor Abubakar’s commitment to open more rural roads to fast track development across the state, adding, “the Mansur- Taraba road will create more wealth to the people of the 2 states.”
Gidada particularly “thank President Buhari for signing into the Law on the Northeast Development Commission Bill”.
