2027: I’ll run again under Labour Party – Peter Obi confirms
By Jeffrey Agbo
The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has confirmed that he will run again in the 2027 presidential race under the same party’s platform.
Obi made the declaration in a viral video that circulated on social media on Saturday, during an interactive session with his supporters.
When asked directly about his political affiliation ahead of the next general election, Obi responded, “I will still continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party.”
The former Anambra State governor also addressed concerns about internal crises within the Labour Party, attributing much of the discord affecting political parties to systemic interference by the Nigerian government.
He said, “What is happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is caused by the government, quote me anywhere.
“We had a problem in our party before, in the past. Yar’Adua was the President. I went to him then; he called the INEC chairman (Prof. Maurice Iwu) and told him I don’t want any problem in any party. We were forced to fix it.
“But today, in all the parties, there are problems; these are deliberate problems caused by the system. These are some of the things I want to clean up if I have the opportunity.
“Parties will function very well because you can’t have a system working without a strong opposition.”
He urged Nigerians to take ownership of the electoral process and ensure their votes count, stressing that while political parties may assign agents to monitor elections, the final safeguard lies with the electorate.
Looking ahead, Obi emphasised the need for generational leadership shifts, proposing a retirement age for politicians vying for public office.
He revealed that he would be 65 by the time of the next election in 2027 and expressed reluctance to continue contesting into his 70s.
