2024 Paris Olympics: Shorunmu suggests how Super Falcons can qualify from ‘group of death’

Shorunmu noted that the Super Falcons can only progress to the knock out stages if they put on a very strong performance

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Ike Shorunmu has told the Super Falcons that they must be at their best to qualify for the knock out stages of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

He made this known recently during an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Randy Waldrum’s side were drawn in a  tough group consisting of world champions Spain, Japan and Brazil, after edging out the Banyana Banyana of South Africa at the qualifying stage.

Speaking on how to qualify from the so called “group of death”, Shorunmu said Super Falcons need to put up strong performances in the group games.

He added that to qualify ahead of two of the best teams in the world, the Nigerian female team must also be fully focused and avoid distractions. 

Giving tips on how to qualify, Shorunmu said: “I urge the Falcons to be strong, focused, and resilient in their game at the group stage because the team belongs to the group of world football champions

“At the same time, it is a necessity for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the technical crew to involve seasoned players.

“Beware of aged players for better performance by the team at the group stage.”

The Super Falcons are making a return to the Olympics after a 16-year absence.

The West Africans will face Brazil in their first game in the women’s football event on July 25.
