Veronica Openibo delivered a powerful speech to nearly 190 Catholic leaders on day three of Pope Francis’ four-day Vatican summit on clergy sex abuse.h

Openibo blasted the actions of the priests and asked why they kept silent for that long.

“How could the clerical church have kept silent, covering these atrocities?” she asked. “We must acknowledge that our mediocrity, hypocrisy and complacency have brought us to this disgraceful and scandalous place we find ourselves as a church,” Openibo said.

She challenged the priests to brace up because the scandal will not pass so easily because their credibility is at stake.

“At the present time, we are in a state of crisis and shame. We have seriously clouded the grace of the Christ-mission. Is it possible for us to move from fear of scandal to truth?” Openibo said.

Openibo is one of three catholic women invited to speak at the Summit at the Vatican.

Women rights advocates said she represents courage for women for standing up to speak truth to power for what they termed a termite threatening the foundation of the Catholic church.
