Subscribers to Glo have complained of having difficulty interconnecting with MTN on their mobile phones.

When TheNiche sought to find out what the issues were at Glo, an insider who pleaded anonymity said the issue is being handled at the top.

“Efforts are on to resolve the issue and I cannot say how far they have gone in doing that,” he said.

The source added that Glo, MTN and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) have met on the matter to sort the problems out.

MTN said Glo owes it about N10 billion in interconnectivity charges.

But the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) confirmed on Tuesday that the total interconnect indebtedness of Globacom, Nigeria’s second-largest telecom company, to MTN as N4.4 billion.

TheNiche gathered from the regulator and other sources familiar with the matter that the debt burden and the accrued interest over the years had led to the decision to partially disconnect Globacom subscribers from making calls to MTN lines.

According to the source, about N500 million has been paid by Glo to MTN to offset part of the debt.

As of December last year, the interconnect debt in the industry stood at N165billion.
