Social media users in Nigeria are outraged over cable television, DStv allocating the number 419 to the country’s government-owned television station.

The number 419 denotes fraud in the country which is a section in Nigeria’s criminal code that stipulates stiff punishment for fraud.

Nigerian journalist, Kadaria Ahmed, was the one who drew the attention of viewers to it which an aide to President Buhari, Lauretta Onochie, also reacted to.

The decree became an Act of parliament when the country returned to democracy in 1999. It was promulgated by the military government Ibrahim Babangida.

The Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) number drew the ire of viewers in Nigeria who saw it as an insult to Africa’s most populous nation.
