Nigeria’s finance minister, Zainab Ahmed, has hinted of land borders reopening, more than one year after it was closed.
President Muhammadu Buhari closed the borders in August 2019 as a measure against illegal imports, weapons shipment and other illegal activities. But the decision has resulted in spiral inflation, especially food prices. It has also stifled businesses that relied on raw materials from other countries.
In an interview with journalists, Zainab Ahmed said a committee set up to review the issues would soon submits its recommendation to President Muhammadu Buhari.
The finance minister said the committee recommended that the land borders be reopened.
She said the committee would soon submit its report to President Muhammadu Buhari after which a formal pronouncement would be made on the matter.
