Youth online registration for Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to decide the 2023 election rose to 4.5 million in May, up from 3.5 million in April and 2.77 million in March. Youths aged 18-34 years dominated all demographics.

Data released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) shows that the youth accounted for 69.5 per cent of completed online registration since the beginning of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in June 2021.

The INEC said 10.2 million new applications were received but only 6.5 million applicants completed their registration, out of which youths accounted for 4.5 million.

Youth interest in registering for the PVC this year has been aroused by campaigns by influencers on various social media platforms, especially Twitter.

SERAP seeks registration extension

The INEC closed online registration on 31 May and said continuous voter registration would end on 30 June.

However, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu to extend the deadline for voter registration just as he extended the deadline for party primaries.

“Extending the voter registration deadline would provide more time for eligible voters, including young people, the elderly, people living with disability, as well as those resident in states facing security challenges and living in IDP camps to participate in the 2023 elections,” SERAP said.
