Nigerian workers in telecommunications and electricity sectors have warned the Nigeria Police Force against incarcerating the President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, saying they would shut down the National grid, and telecom services at midnight Wednesday if he’s arrested.
TheNiche had earlier reported that the police in a letter on Monday summoned Ajaero for questioning on Tuesday over an alleged link to terrorism financing and other allegations.
Responding to the invitation, the labour leader in a letter addressed to the police on Tuesday turned down the summon, saying it came too late.
He, however, fixed Wednesday, August 29 to honor the invitation.
Reacting to the development via separate notices on Tuesday, the General Secretaries of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), Dominic Igwebike and the National Union of Postal and Telecommunications Employees (NUPTE), Mary Nwosu, vowed to down tools if Ajaero is arrested.

According to a notice to its members, the NUEE, consisting of workers in Transmission Company of Nigeria said: “That upon any arrest of the NLC President or any other Labour Leader, all workers are to down tools from 12 midnightf 21 August 2024.”
Subsequently, NUPTE issued a similar directive to workers in the postal and telecoms sector in Nigeria.
Prior to this, NLC had vowed to embark on a nationwide strike if Ajaero is arrested by the police.
