After due consultations, the board of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has decided to stop the league temporarily with effect from last Wednesday, May 20, throughout the period of the FIFA Women World Cup.
Secretary of the board, Isaac Ajisafe, said the decision was taken in consideration of Nigeria’s participation in the 2015 FIFA Women World Cup in Canada.
He said: “We wish to inform all clubs in the league that hostilities will resume after the Super Falcons returns to the country.
“Please be informed that the decision is imperative, so as to allow clubs, players and officials and all concerned football-loving Nigerians to actively support the Super Falcons of Nigeria in its quest to win the 2015 FIFA World Cup, and more so, that most of the players playing in the league will definitely feature for Nigeria in the World Cup.”
He advised Nigerians to pray for the success of the Super Falcons at the competition, as the girls are very determined to surpass their quarterfinal record of 1999 in the United States of America.
The FIFA Women World Cup holds in Canada from June 6 to July 5.
