Following a recent shouting match with a young naval officer, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has vowed to continue giving his political opponents sleepless nights.

He made this known on Thursday at a media briefing shortly after the FCT Executive Committee meeting.

FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike and Lt Yerima during the altercation

The minister was defending his outburst with a Naval officer, Lieutenant AM Yerima, during a land dispute in the Gaduwa area of Abuja.

The plot of land, which was allegedly allocated for Parks and Recreation, is being altered by the owner, a former Chief of Naval Staff, Awwal Gambo (retd).

Efforts by officials of the FCT Administration to stop workers from illegally converting the land from the original allocation failed, as military officers were drafted to the site and prevented them from carrying out their duties.

Aggrieved by this move, Wike stormed the site in company of his team, but they were prevented from accessing the property by Yerima and other military officers on the site.

Yerima’s insistence led to a heated argument with Wike, and the situation later degenerated into a national outrage.

While some Nigerians described the officer’s action as an affront to civil rule and the constitution, others claimed the minister’s behaviour was beneath the office he occupies.

Despite this, Wike insisted he followed the law during the altercation with the military officer.

He, however, noted that his opponents in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC), or the African Democratic Congress (ADC), will continue to have sleepless nights.

Speaking during the briefing, Wike said: “I have no regrets for my political opponents, I will continue to make them have sleepless nights, whether you are in PDP, APC, or ADC.

“I have no regrets, as long as I know that I’m standing by the law. If you like, bring any ethnic or colouration, it’s your business.”
