An openly lesbian woman has taken to social media to advocate for the repeal of the law prohibiting same-sex marriage.
Known with the Twitter name – Amara, the lesbian, or the handle name, @the_amarion, she said the existence of the law makes it hard for her to kiss her lover any time she picks her up at the airport.
She said: “Everytime I pick my lover up from the airport, we have to wait till we get home, behind closed gate to kiss, to really touch and feel each other and it sucks. #RepealSSMPA”
The #RepealSSMPA is a hashtag created by same-sex advocates calling for the scrapping of the Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act (SSMPA).
Among those asking for the prohibition of the law include @_sugarbeing_ who said: “Your beliefs, religion, delusion or paranoia should not steal someone’s joy, freedom and happiness. Misunderstanding or fear of people with a different line of thought process from you, as long as they do not cause harm, should not be a reason for imprisonment. #RepealSSMPA.”
@vicw0nder said: “The LGBTQ+ community in Nigeria will not hide so that y’all can be comfortable. We will continue to be visible, to take up space. We will continue to push it down your throats (since Nigerians claim this is what we do). This country belongs to us all! #RepealSSMPA.”
