We are not opposed to constitution reform – Buhari

In apparent bid to absolve himself of blame on the structural deficiencies in the country, President Muhammadu Buhari has declared that his administration is not averse to the clamour for constitution reforms. He also assured of the government’s willingness to play a supportive role in the process, adding however, that the responsibility for the constitution reform falls squarely on the National Assembly.

The President who made the remarks in his national broadcast to mark June 12 democracy Day, also stated that he is committed to bequeathing to Nigerians sustainable democracy legacies anchored on free, fair and credible electoral processes.

He said that his accession to making June 12 Democracy Day, as against May 29, was largely in response to the yearnings of Nigerians. He listed the achievements of his administration in the last six year, stressing that through interventionist measures by the Central Bank, 10 million indirect and indirect jobs have been created. In similar vein, the Bank of Industry has through various initiatives, created over 800,000 indirect and direct jobs for Nigerians. He assured that the government’s revamp plans for COVID-19 pandemic are in course and are indeed, recording phenomenal growth. Through the scheme, he said, more than 1.6 million poor and vulnerable households have been impacted on through conditional cash transfer.

Buhari, who admitted that there is still more to be done in the face of scarce resources, stated that the agenda by his administration to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years, remains on course. He called for co-operation from Nigerians in the efforts to move the country ahead.
