WAEC creates room for candidates to rewrite May/June exam, provided they are not banned for malpractice

Candidates who do not do well in their May/June West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) can now rewrite their papers in January the following year, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced.
The initiative allows students to resit their WASSCE in January, beginning from 2025, according to WAEC Head of Public Affairs Office John Kapi, who made the announcement on JoyNews AM Show in Ghana where WAEC headquarters is based.
In the past, student who wanted to resit all or part of their WAEC papers in the May/June examination could write the substitute General Certificate Ordinary Level Examination (GCE O/L) in November/December the same year or had to wait till the next cycle of WAEC May/June exam the following year.
“Students who access their results now and realise they need to resit one or two papers have until 8th January to register online through our website or at WAEC-accredited internet cafés,” Kapi explained.
“The exams will take place from 24th January to 15th February 2025.”
He clarified that students whose results are cancelled are also eligible to sit the WASSCE PC1 examination, provided they are not banned for some years for malpractice.
