Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi, reportedly ordered the flogging of state civil servants who came to the venue of a project site late, according to a video shared by human rights activist and former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Professor Chidi Odinkalu.

Odinkalu shared the video with an accompanied comment on his Twitter feed.

Odinkalu said: “So, today in Ebonyi,  @GovDaveUmahi went for a project inspection & then instructed the soldiers to flog – yes flog! – civil servants who arrived late. Not done, Dave Umahi supervised the flogging. Tomorrow, he’ll be rewarded with seat in  @NGRSenate.”

The video, filmed by someone speaking the Ezza dialect of Igbo language, has elicited angry reactions from Nigerians.

@iyke_nwabuko said: “A governor who asks that Adults be whipped in public would ask that they be shot in darkness.”

@1SirBash said: “The worst part is that the same people he just flogged will still support and vote for him.”

@aku_buo said: “This shouldn’t be taken for granted. There should be consequences. The South East have been taken for granted for too long. Ndi Ebonyi through ballot and court must show their displeasure.”
