In what is believed to be the latest clampdown on the opposition in Imo State by the Hope Uzodimma administration, the State Police Command has invited some chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over alleged murder, kidnapping and arson.

Those invited in a letter dated March 13 include Imo PDP chairman; former governor of the state, Emeka Ihedioha; Rep-elect, Ugochinyere Ikenga; and former deputy governor of the state, Gerald Irona.

The letter was signed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Admin), DCP Ukachi Opara, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police in Imo.

According to the letter, Imo PDP chairman is to appear before the police in the company of the aforementioned on Thursday, March 16 at 10am, about 48 hours before the state House of Assembly election in the state.

The letter addressed to the Imo PDP chairman reads, “The office of State Intelligence Bureau, Imo State Police Command, State Headquarters Owerri is investigating the above underlined case involving some prominent members of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Imo State chapter.

Irona was remanded in the custody of the correctional centre following his arraignment in a magistrate court last week.

Sources in Imo PDP told TheNiche on Tuesday that the Uzodimma administration is bent on stifling the opposition especially as the state assembly poll draws nearer.

The sources said the Uzodimma administration’s incompetence in governance is the reason the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has grounded activities in Imo following the government’s bad treatment of workers and harassment of labour leaders.
